Marron Buono Festival – Marradi, Mugello – Florence, Tuscany

30 Sep

Marradi is a village, part of the northern area of Mugello, on the Appennines between Tuscany amd Emilia Romagna.

This is the native villa of the poem Dino Campana, and land of Marron Buono (a kind of big chestnut) that got the Mugello area IGP trademark. Marradi and the surrounding area are rich of chestnut woods, producing this high quality chestnut.  Some years ago the “Mugello di Marradi Chestnut Road” has been created.

This “Mugello di Marradi Chestnut Road” involves the whole territory of the municipal and offers to the tourist a real chestnut based “journey” (for more details visit the web site http://www.stradadelmarrone.it).

The gastronomy of the Mugello area is rich of dishes based on “marroni” such as marrons glacés and Marradi marroni cake, a symbol of local gastronomic culture.

During the famous “Chestnut Festival”, that takes place every year in October, that in 2013, takes place on the 6, 13, 20 and 27.

In this period you can reach Marradi by an evocative steam-train.

The marroni of Marradi are one of the many reasons to come in Tuscany during the Autumn. October is a beautiful month. The temperature is still mild, and the gastronomy offers some of the best and tasteful products, such as porcini mushrooms, truffles, of course marroni chestnut, but it is also time of the game dishes and the new olive oil.
